After my terrible experience at the airport, I finally made it to Washington. Baltimore is a solid 20 or so miles from DC, so I grabbed a shuttle van that would drop me off at the front door of the hostel. The driver was a nice guy from Nigeria, he knew quite a bit about the NI political situation from living in Belfast about 12 years ago.
Washington, DC
After checking into the hostel, I headed out for something to eat. It took a while to find any life in the city, but I eventually wound up in Chinatown which was bustling and grabbed a burger.
Washington is very easy to navigate…

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – I hate airports. There are some places I find unpleasant, and I don’t really like doing it – like the dentist or going to work, but I don’t hate them. Airports, though, I have a greater dislike for. Unless you’re having a particularly bad holiday, the airport is probably the worst part of your trip.
This morning I needed to get up early to catch a flight from Chicago’s O’Hare Int’l Airport to Baltimore, MD…

I’ve been having a great time here so far in Chicago, keeping busy most days. On Tuesday, I bought new shoes as my old one almost fell apart on me. Take a look:
Quite proud of myself, as it only cost me $22.
Yesterday I had a particularly produce day. I got up early and went to visit the Museum of Science and Industry, which I got into for free as it was one of their free days after Labour Day. It was a huge museum, and actually really interesting. I spent the entire day there from 9.30 to closing time at 4pm…

It’s the end of my second full day in the city, and I really like my hostel because it has decent wi-fi, which proves what a geek I am that I find it difficult to cope without the internet for a few days.
Today is Labour Day in America (learn to spell “Labour” correctly, America) which is the equivalent of May Day back home. Officially this celebrates the Labour Movement worldwide, for the general public it means a long weekend and lots of places you wanted to go being closed.
My first stop of the day was the library, which was closed…

So San Diego was cool and lots of fun, I will upload the pictures to Flickr tomorrow if I have a chance. It was nice to have a week of lazing at the beach and sightseeing, and Southern California is definitely much more the image of California that most people think of.
But, I’ve moved on from there. I’m writing this from my hostel in Chicago right now. I just checked in, totally exhausted from hauling all my stuff around but not too tired which is good. I had just the right amount of change to buy a drink from the machine but it’s sold out of everything. Great…

It’s been quite a while since I last put something up here, so it’s about time for an update.
Right now I’m sitting in a very nice, if a little too warm, hostel room in downtown San Diego in Southern California. I’m just 25 miles from the international border to Tijuana, Mexico. It’s warm and has been sunny the past few days, and although it’s still California it feels like a completely different place.
On Sunday morning Valerie and I flew here from SF (with Virgin, who are actually very good and cheap). When we arrived we took a cab to our accommodation…

Last weekend I spent a few days in Santa Cruz with some friends. It was fun, but I was expecting it to be just Saturday and we ended up sleeping over in a motel which meant spending the whole weekend in the same clothes.
I also didn’t bet on the weather being warm, so I neglected to take decent sunscreen, flip flops and shorts. I managed to borrow most of what I needed, but smelled quite a lot.

Spot the two Irish guys (clue: look for the sun tan)
The guy on the left on this photo is the craziest driver I’ve ever sat with…
