A few days ago I got the new album by Nightwish, entitled Dark Passion Play. It’s their 6th studio album overall, but first album with Anette Olzen as lead singer, after they fired Tarja Turunnen (although I reckon it’s her husbands fault she got fired).
Tis a mighty fine album, Anette doesn’t have the same style at all as Tarja – she’s got a more straight forward female rock style which I think a lot of people will find more accessible. This album also features a lot more vocals from the band’s bass player, Marco, who sings lead on a number of tracks and does back up in almost all songs.
By all accounts, it’s certainly a new direction for the band musically. The first song, The Poet and the Pendulum is 14 minutes long, their longest song to date. And it just shows why Tuomas is a genius, it’s a fantastic song. They also have two songs – The Islander and Last of the Wilds which are in the Celtic style and you could swear they were Irish rock songs, which is bizarre for Finnish band. They also have a song called Master Passion Greed which is a full on metal assault – their heaviest song so far. And rightly so – they’re basically ripping Tarja’s husband to shreds for being a self centered control freak.
Best tracks for me are either the instrumental Last of the Wilds or the last single, Amaranth. Go look up Amaranth on YouTube, it’s got a stupid video but it’s a fantastic wee tune and Anette really shows what she’s got in it.
I’m going to see the Foo’s tonight in the Coliseum in Oakland. 20,000 people, catching the BART over there in a little over an hour. Rock on!
i wanna go see foo’s… I’m really jealous
Ohh Nightwish is great- driving home late from small group music, shall have to investigate.
